11th Annual Celebrity Chef Dinner Sees High Funding for The Summer Outreach Club

Portsmouth, OH. March 22, 2019, The Counseling Center’s 11th Annual Celebrity Chef Dinner was a totally awesome time, seeing preliminary numbers totaling over $36,000 raised for the program. SOMC’s Friends Center was overflowing with the hundreds of community members who came out to show their support and enjoy the “I love the 80s” themed evening.

Master of Ceremonies, Steve Hayes, once again brought energy with his colorful commentary throughout the evening. As the doors opened, a flurry of activity was found, from the Celebrity Chefs vying for the People’s Choice Award (PCA), to the Silent Auction that was composed of dozens of items varying from custom furniture from Wayne Stump of Stump Standards, to Bengals Tickets graciously donated by OSCO Industries, other items included Zoo Tickets and gift cards or items from local businesses.

Guests had the opportunity to indulge in delicious appetizers, followed a throwback dinner. Music was provided by the Rockin’ Reggie Robinson and in-Crowd festivities included various raffles, voting for the PCA and an appearance by a slightly taller than average Prince, played by community favorite Dr. Mike Raies. One highlight of the evening was the 25-pound chocolate candy bar recreation of the event logo, handcrafted by Karen Davis of Kakao Konfections.

In honor of the upcoming 30th year of Summer Outreach, the Celebrity Chefs of the evening were alumni or long-time partners of the program. “We are so grateful to have an opportunity to share the experiences of our Chefs,” said Katie Trapp, Event and Marketing Coordinator for The Counseling Center. “You could tell from the beginning that they were excited to give back to a program and to help their mentor and the 27-year leader of the program, Clarence Parker.” Returning to the event this year is the People’s Choice Award, with the early voting and promotion from the chefs, there was an additional $4,057.27 raised with the award going to Drew and DJ Carter for the highest team total.

In addition to Alumni, current members were also scattered throughout the event sharing their stories and favorite memories. “In the past few years we’ve had a video playing to highlight the actions of the Summer Outreach Program,” Trapp explained, “But with it being the 30th year we really wanted to give people the opportunity to actually speak with those who have and still attend. It really brings the event back to its core purpose, it’s all for the kids.”

In addition to the money raised from the dinner, The Counseling Center has pursued and been the recipient of an additional $10,500 grant from the ADAMHS Board of Adams, Lawrence, and Scioto Counties. Corey Allison, Outreach and Prevention Coordinator, said that with this sort of additional funding, the program will look to add a few more trips. “We realize how important it is to show these kids experiences they otherwise might not have. We’re looking into getting tickets to Red’s games or some larger museums to provide them with new learning opportunities.”

The Celebrity Chef Dinner Committee would like to recognize Will Robinson and Nick Montavon for returning to cook the main buffet, 83 Sweets for their amazing cupcakes, Kakao Konfections, Jett’s Popcorn, and of course the support of the community. The night always proves to be a celebration of the spirit of the community. When we all come together, especially for the kids, we’re building a better future.
